Port City Captains

The Port City Captains’ professional basketball team is a celebration of excellence dating back to the founding of Port City, also known as Stockton, in 1850. Although it is fictitious, the team carries deep roots in Stockton. The name honors Captain Charles M. Weber, founder of Stockton, for his trade efforts during the California Gold Rush.

My inspiration for the visual identity came from my love for Stockton. Gold and navy are colors often associated with captain uniforms and represent the numerous ports Stockton houses. Rockwell, as a typeface, pays homage to typefaces commonly used during the 1800s, where Captain Weber conducted his trades. The use of the ports has been and still is a vital resource Stockton has hence its nickname Port City.

My process began with researching Stockton’s history when deciding what sports team would fit best. It is common for most sports teams to use nicknames of the cities they play for. I used Port City instead of Stockton for the city name. Below are some mock-ups and branding guidelines I created for their branding.
